Reference Forms

The 2024 Census of State and Federal Adult Correctional Facilities (CCF) will be administered using two similar but distinct data collection forms. One (but not both) of these forms should be completed for each correctional facility. Read the descriptions below to identify the appropriate form for your facility. Form CJ-43A

Your facility uses this form if:

  • Less than 50% of the facility’s inmates were regularly permitted to leave the facility unaccompanied for work release, study release, or rehabilitation.

AND

  • The facility functioned as one of the following for the largest number of its inmates:
  • General adult population confinement
  • Alcohol/drug treatment confinement
  • Reception/diagnosis/classification
  • Medical treatment/hospitalization confinement
  • Mental health/psychiatric confinement
  • Boot camp
  • Primarily for persons returned to custody (e.g., parole violators)
  • Primarily for confinement of youthful offenders
  • Geriatric care

Form CJ-43B

Your facility uses this form if:

  • 50% or more of the facility's inmates were regularly permitted to leave the facility unaccompanied to work release, study release, or rehabilitation.

OR

  • The facility functioned as community corrections/work release/prerelease for the largest number of its inmates.
